        Obama on U.S. government's COVID-19 response

        Added On May 18, 2020

Obama said, "More than anything, this pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they're doing." and "A lot of them aren't even pretending to be in charge." Obama made the remarks on Saturday during a virtual commencement speech for historically black colleges and universities, without naming specific officials. According to Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. has over 1.48 million confirmed cases and more than 89,000 deaths so far. Both numbers are far higher than those in any other country or region. The current administration of the U.S. has aggressively defended its handling of the public health crisis, while critics have pointed out that its leaders and some officials ignored early warnings and were slow to act and not responding adequately, and even tried to politicize the situation to shift blames. However, White House press secretary on Saturday said that President Trump's response against the coronavirus "has saved lives."
